Guidelines for Interfaith Garden Volunteers
Thank you for being part of the Lexington Interfaith Garden! Together, as an interfaith community, we are growing high quality, healthy food and giving it away to people in need. For free. We hope that you will have fun and make new friends at the garden.
Many blessings as you get some dirt under your nails!
Note to all: Mindful of the health of all, we ask that you stay home if you feel sick.
Arrival: The Interfaith Garden is located near the Lexington Battle Green and First Parish at 5 Harrington Road. You are welcome to park your car in the back parking lot of First Parish. Please show up on time and go to the barn next to the garden.
Please sign in inside the barn so we can get to know you.
What to Bring: Wear old clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty, a hat if it's sunny. You might also want to bring insect repellant, sunscreen, and a water bottle.
Ask Questions: Gardening is all about learning by doing and we like to envision the Interfaith Garden as a big, outdoor classroom. Carla and Rachel, our head gardeners, knows all! They will let you know your tasks for the workday and please feel free to ask if you don’t know how to do something (For example, please don’t “weed” the tops of our carrots!). Carla has a tremendous amount of knowledge about organic gardening, so ask away.
Say Hello: Take a minute to say "Hi" and introduce yourself to someone you don't know. Gardening is much more fun when we get to know one another!
Garden Etiquette: Be careful where you walk in the garden (you don’t want to accidentally squash some seedlings). Don’t pick or eat anything in the garden without permission. No throwing rocks or climbing trees.
Children at the Garden: Children are welcome at the Interfaith Garden and should be accompanied by an adult.
Inclement Weather: If it is raining heavily, the workday will be canceled and it will not be re-scheduled. Instead, please sign up for the next workday with your faith community. If it is cloudy or lightly drizzling, we will still plan on gardening so come prepared.
Cancellation after signing up: Since we rely on volunteers, we count on you showing up. Please give us 3 days’ notice to give adequate time to ask for subs.
